Among anabolic steroids, there are drugs that, in addition to raising estradiol due to aromatization (converting testosterone to estradiol), can increase prolactin.

An increase in prolactin above the reference values causes the significant negative consequences: fluid retention, decreased libido and worsening of erection, infertility, a decrease in secondary sexual characteristics, an increase in the female type of mammary glands (gynecomastia) and possible discharge from them. High prolactin worsens your cholesterol levels, impairs lipid metabolism and increases the tendency of obesity. Also, there is evidence of an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. In the long term, it leads to a decrease in bone mineral density. Your bones become more fragile.

Many athletes complain of mood: apathy, nervousness and anxiety, irritability, emotional instability, and even the development of psychosis during elevated prolactin levels periods. Cases of depression, high fatigue, memory impairment, poor concentration, and pain in the heart are common. Vegetative disturbances are also possible.

Elevated prolactin should be reduced with medication. here are several drugs to reduce it: they are all essentially dopamine receptor stimulants. Typically, drugs such as bromcreptine and cabergoline are used for these purposes.

Bromocriptine is the first generation of such drugs with a rougher effect and a large number of significant side effects, while cabergoline is a more modern drug, with a longer effect, better tolerance and same effectiveness.

Bromocriptine should be taken 1-2 times a day, while cabergoline - 1 time in 7 days.

It is known that after orgasm, the level of prolactin in the male body rises greatly and remains high for some time. 

The usual dosage of this drug is 0.25 mg every 7 days.

Most often, the initial dose to check how much prolactin will drop is the minimum 0.25 mg per week, after which a blood test is taken and the result is compared. Usually, several weeks of admission is enough to bring prolactin back to normal reference values, but each time you need to check the blood tests.

It is necessary to decrease prolactin to normal values. Sometimes prolactin even slightly above the reference values can already cause the above problems, but sometimes the athlete does not notice its negative effects even if prolactin is overestimated twice as much as the allowable values. This does not mean that it can be left elevated.

Always keep an eye on your blood counts and have a drug such as cabergoline on hand if you are going to use progestogens. You also need to keep in mind that prolactin can increase directly, even if there are no drugs in your course that directly increase its values, and even if you are not on the course.
